Summary
Works rotating shifts in the control room to ensure the plant operates safely and remains in compliance with plant requirements and governmental regulations. Monitors controls, operates switches, and performs recordkeeping. Communicates with operational staff to start, stop, and adjust equipment as necessary.
- Controls and monitors various plant systems and communicates with operating staff as necessary to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations of the plant. Starts, stops, and controls various power plant systems that include fans, pumps, regulators, turbines, boilers, etc.
- Performs continuous monitoring of plant functions and responds to alarms. Takes corrective action of all kinds to maintain safe conditions for operating personnel and all equipment while obtaining maximum load as conditions warrant.
- Makes load changes as necessary or as system demands. Verifies the plant is operated in accordance with technical specifications of the boiler and turbine. Promptly diagnose and rectify any abnormal conditions that may arrise.
- Trains operators and new controls employees in job duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- May be assigned to work in lower operator classification on a rotating basis.
- Communicates with Control Specialists on adjacent shifts to provide continuous service.
- Directs shift activities in the absence of management.

Qualifications
Required-this is a Journeyman level position
- High School Diploma or GED
- Work will include rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and requires overtime. Must respond to overtime and callouts
- Must commit to working safely and adhere to Company safety rules including wearing a hardhat, safety toe footwear, and protective eye wear, and Proper Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Must have Control Board Operator experience (Preferably on Ovation Controls), completed a control operator/specialist apprenticeship (or equivalent), with a minimum of 2 years experience operating a large coal burning power plant (or equivalent)
- Candidates will be required to pass a written and practical test prior to selection
- Knowledge of equipment operation such as pumps, motors, boilers, turbines, and other power plant equipment.
- Successfully pass the Xcel Energy screening requirements, which include pre-employment testing, a drug screening test and a general security clearance
- Must have Control Room Operator experience (preferably on Ovation controls), completed a Control Room Operator/Control Specialist apprenticeship (or equivalent) with a minimum of 2 years experience operating a large coal burning power plant
- Previous experience as an operator in a power plant and familiarity with power generation
- Knowledge of NERC/FERC guidelines and environmental regulations is preferred
